Xubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
eGreetings,
I recently decided to give the latest offering from the people at Canonical Ltd. Xubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron a spin on my Laptop. I was rather pleased with this distribution. Thumbs Up not having to try and get the wireless component to work. In fact it worked right out of the box without resorting to using either Modprobe, Mad-WiFi, nor NDISWRAPPER. It worked right out of the box with my PCMCIA Wi-Fi Card on my Laptop – SWEETNESS.
Thumbs Down with VMWare Workstation, each time I tried to run it it asked to be RE-Configured. Plus, if I launched from either the command line or from the Desktop short-cut it would ask me where my virtual machine was located. However, this was not an issue when I was running Debian Etch on the same Laptop.
No other issues of note. Due to another project (more on that later), I will be installing a different operating system on the Laptop. Once complete, I may come back to Xubuntu – should be around the time that 8.10 rolls out in October – which by then may have better VMWare Support.

Debian Etch has supplanted Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn 7.04 on one of my desktop computers. I now have three computers dual-booted with Debian Etch – as much as I liked Ubuntu previously – the newest version, Fiesty Fawn, has continued to be fraught with issues for me. Maybe Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon 7.10 will be an improvement in October of 2007. I will take a wait and see approach.
Until the next update.

eGreetings,
I thought I would give moonshine a try, Fedora 7 ‘Moonshine’ that is. I switched from Fedora Core 6 ‘Zod’ to Debian Etch because of Beryl and Compiz issues on one of my mobile computers.
When Fedora 7 ‘Moonshine’ was released I opted to install it on my desktop since it utilizes a more robust GPU. Ten days later, I find myself using this distribution of Linux more and more. An added bonus both Beryl and Compiz are working great with the more robust GPU.
Until the Next Update,

I have had a very pleasant experience with Debain Etch 4.0. It has been so good that I decided to install it on another one of my mobile computers in favor of Ubuntu.
Since both computers are mobile, wireless is a must. Each computer has a different wireless set up. One has a built in Broadcom 43xx chipset, the other relies on PCMCIA card based an Atheros chipset.
Wireless on Linux systems can be a bit of a hit and miss proposition. In my situation both systems needed to be configured manually. For the system with the Atheros chipset I found this web page was just what I needed: WiFi/WEP/WPA. As for the Broadcom 43xx chipset based computer, I found this web page extremely helpful, too: Wireless on Debian.

eGreetings,
I have decided to live on the Etch and give Debian Etch a spin. The change came about as my Fedora Core 6 ‘Zod’ install gave me a few issues with Beryl and Compiz. Plus it gave me the chance to use a moderately cleaver play on words, living on the etch, that is. Ubuntu uses Etch as the base operating system so there are many similarities and common repositories available.
So far it was been quick, nimble and seems to work faster than my FC6 Zod install did.
Until the next update.

eGreetings,
A brief update on how things are going with my Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. Since doing a clean install on my desktop computer, approximately two weeks, Feisty Fawn has performed admirably. So admirably, I just installed it on one of my mobile computers. Now if I could just get Beryl to play nice with the ATI GPU like I did with my nVidia GPU on the desktop, then I would be happy as a clam at high tide.
